Peace Action New Mexico is an affiliate of the national organization Peace Action, formerly SANE/FREEZE. Beginning in 1957, SANE pressed for an end to atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. During the 1980's, SANE/FREEZE mobilized millions of people against the nuclear arms race and the threat of nuclear war. The organization changed its name to Peace Action in 1993.
Peace Action New Mexico was formed in July 1998. The Director and many Board members are seasoned activists and organizers. We are committed to diversity (economic, age, race, culture, gender and sexual orientation/ preference) within the organization and in our outreach. Our members come from all walks of life, working in all kinds of jobs and occupations. We are people of many faiths and many racial and ethnic backgrounds. What unites us is our commitment to a more peaceful world.
Peace Action is committed to abolishing nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction, redirecting excessive military expenditures to domestic investment, ending global weapons trafficking, preventing the erosion of civil liberties both in this country and elsewhere, preventing the militarization of space, and fostering non-military solutions to international conflicts. We are grassroots, member-supported not-for-profit organization whose volunteers and dedicated staff work at local, state, national, and international levels.
Peace Action New Mexico is a financially independent Affiliate of the national organization. Because we lobby on legislation, donations are not tax-deductible.
