WHAT IS ART & BUSINESS WORKING FOR PEACE?

A.&B.W.P. is a coalition of New Mexico artists and business owners who are committed to peace and social justice, both locally and internationally.

It supports the work of Peace Action New Mexico to educate and inform the public on peace and justice issues. It supports public forums, conferences, teach-ins, relief efforts and speakers in public and private schools and universities.

Peace Action is the nationºs largest non-profit grassroots organization working for peace and disarmament with over 80,000 members and 100 chapters. Peace Action New Mexico is a growing affiliate of Peace Action.

WHY SHOULD WE JOIN ART & BUSINESS WORKING FOR PEACE?

Working in coalition with other individuals and groups is a very powerful way to affect change. A.&B.W.P. members share many goals and values, and it is true: There is strength in numbers.

WHAT ISSUES DOES ART & BUSINESS WORKING FOR PEACE SUPPORT?

1. Working to prevent the erosion of Civil Liberties

We support the civil liberties of all peoples, their right to self-determination and to live in a safe environment.

2. Preventing an attack on Iraq.

Over 1.5 million people have died in Iraq as a result of U.S. imposed economic sanctions since the end of the Gulf War. UN inspectors say Iraq is not a threat to other nations.

3. Stopping Crimes Against Humanity.

We work to hold international criminals who commit crimes against humanity legally accountable in the international court system and to change public policy in order to protect the lives of innocent civilians.

4. Stopping the militarization of Space.

We work to defund Missile Defense.

5. Working in the U.N. for the abolition of weapons of mass destruction.

These weapons include nuclear weapons, depleted uranium ammunition, land mines, and chemical and biological weapons. We work to have the U.S. join in banning all these weapons under international law and to hold all countries to the rule of law.

6. Opposing bio-weapons capable facilities at National Laboratories.

Los Alamos National Lab proposes to open a Bio Safety Level-3 (BSL-3) facility to study live and virulent biological pathogens. This facility could undermine international treaties by bringing into question why the countyºs premier nuclear weapons development and production facility would also work on bio-weapons capable pathogens. We are working to require a full Environmental Impact Statement with extensive public participation and public hearings as the next necessary step before they can move forward. This BSL-3 is a test case for future biological facilities at other National Labs such as Sandia and Lawrence Livermore.
